THE CRIDFORD INN TEAM

The Cridford Inn team are passionate about creating amazing experiences. Ness and Paul took over the Inn late summer 2018 and and are joined by Head Chef, Johnny Varah & Guest Chef, Chris Wathen with the determination to make the food at The Cridford inn exceptional.

Ness and Paul moved with their 2 sons from Surrey to carry out their dream of creating a special place for people to visit. A warm, friendly atmosphere with delicious food created fresh on site from local producers and unique comfortable accommodation. The team keeps on growing with like minded people.

We are so blessed to work at this beautiful Devon longhouse in the stunning Teign Valley and are all determined to make our guests experiences memorable when they visit.

The Team

Head Chef - Johnny Varah

Johnny started straight from school washing up in a commercial kitchen. Found he really enjoyed it and worked his way up through the ranks of the brigade and developed a passion for cooking.

He developed a passion for Asian cooking when he was working in Australia at Umami as their Sous chef. It was fantastic learning experience working with Chinese chefs that didn’t speak any English communicating through sign and Google translate in order to put out a high tempo, high-grade food service. It was challenging but he got through it and loved it. Loved the people worked with, loved the food they put out, and was some of the best food he’s ever done.

He also worked at Little Valley in Australia. Whilst Johnny was there the restaurant won a Chef’s Hat Award (a high standard food award). Johnny ran the back section and the Wok section, cooked the main courses and was in control of the side courses.

Johnny loves feeding people, giving people good food, and giving them something to smile about and tell their friends about. Johnny loves the people he works with and likes to create a little family with his team.

Johnny is one of six children. His claim to fame is that his Great Uncle is the founder of the Samaritans charity.

Gueset Chef - Chris Wathen

Chris started as a kitchen porter and soon moved on to the pastries and desserts section where he fell in love with cheffing.

Chris is a family man with a wife and son plus one on the way. As a young chef, he competed in young chef of the year.

Chris worked at the Rendezvous in Exeter, at the time it was the number one restaurant in the area. There he learnt about the highest standards and quality in cooking. He learnt how quality management with the right staff and with everyone knowing what they were responsible for it made delivering the highest standards easy because it ran like clockwork. He has cooked at Bovey castle and Chris has cooked for many celebrities, Ross Kemp, Alan Carr, Geri Halliwell, Richard and Judy, David James.

He was employeed as the Head Chef at The Terrace., Exeter. There he managed the kitchen and coordinated 8 chefs (including 4 agency chefs) to achieve £86,000 of sales over 4 weeks at Christmas, a phenomenal achievement.

Chris enjoys the buzz he gets from a busy service when everything goes well and he loves getting feedback from customers and achieving the goals he set out to do.

We stayed overnight at this wonderful old Inn. We were in the “Exe” room which was charming. Beautifully decorated with a large modern bathroom. The owners Paul and Ness were lovely. They were welcoming and very knowledgeable about the history of the building and surrounding area. The bar and other staff were also really welcoming. We had a really enjoyable 2 course lunch for ten pounds each, excellent value and wonderful home cooked food. The breakfast was great too! We will certainly be back!
